I’d never felt like a bigger failure in my life than when I watched Theo put a knife to Wren’s throat. Never felt weaker than when my family held me down and I met Wren’s gaze across that destroyed study. Never more betrayed than when my father used his Alpha power against me, forcing me to bend to his will. Never felt more helpless than when I couldn’t stop that woman before she sliced through my mate’s throat.

And I had never felt more rage in my life than when I watched Wren try to stop the blood pouring from the wound, her fluttering hands shaking with the tremors of her impending death.

Wren’s agony, her fear, her helplessness all combined with my own, forcing a howl from my throat, the sound claiming something I had yet to accept before now. Because there was no going back to the way things were. There was life before Wren and there was life after Wren, and I prayed to everything—every deity, every spirit, every demon and trickster, every single being with more power than I possessed that I could save her.

My howl sent a shockwave through the room, knocking my brothers back, shoving my father away, making my mother whimper as she stood guard over Mariella’s still form. Her eyelids drooped, and she struggled to keep them open.

“Baby, please,” I pleaded, trying to shake her awake. “Come on, Bird, stay with me. Please, Wren. Please just stay with me.”

I’d thought I’d felt helpless before, but this… this was so much worse.

Heal her. Fuck the consequences. Just heal her.

“I’m gonna fix it, okay? Just stay, beautiful. Please.”

Before I could summon my wolf, Diana snatched my bloody hand from Wren’s neck, the old woman’s grip tighter than even my father’s had been.

“No,” she hissed, her sightless eyes burning a hole in me. “Not until the curse is broken, boy.”

She was keeping me from saving Wren. All this to break a curse I wasn’t even sure she had. I didn’t feel like I’d been drawn on, and who gave a shit if the Bannisters did it if it meant Wren’s death?

“Fuck your curse,” I growled, trying to rip my hand from her grasp.

“Here.” She slapped a glass bottle filled with black dust in my hand and yanked the stopper from the top.

I recognized the substance right away by the smell. Black salt. But black salt was a low-powered way to cross witch circles. It wasn’t going
